On Monday, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced that James had received the most votes to carry the flag for Team USA during the Olympics.

They also stated that a female athlete was selected as well and that the vote will be revealed later on Tuesday.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” said James.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations,” he added. “Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

In 2004, James was on the U.S. Olympic team in Greece. He was also the co-captain of the “Redeem Team” in 2008 and last played in the Olympics in 2012 in London.

James also leads Team USA in all-time assists. He has won four NBA championships, four league MVP awards, and more All-Star appearances (20) than any other player in history.

The Olympic opening ceremony will begin on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Paris and will be shown live on NBC

Delegations are set to float on barges down the Seine river and exit underneath the Eiffel Tower.
