United States 3-0 Chile – follow live

Preview: All-time, Team USA has only faced Chile twice, both in Summer of 2018. The two countries are in different FIFA confederations so the matches were friendlies, not World Cup qualifiers. On goals from five different players, the U.S. women won by a combined 7-0 score.

Lineup:

The United States is playing a very different starting lineup from their opening match.

Forwards: C. Press, C. Lloyd, M. Pugh
Midfield: L. Horan, J. Ertz, M. Brian
Defense: T. Davidson, B. Sauerbrunn, A. Dahlkemper, A. Krieger
Goalkeeper: A. Naeher

4′: The U.S. has had a few chances. A shot by Brian off a corner kick in the second minute went over the bar. Carli Lloyd had a chance that Chile keeper Endler saved off the line.

11′: GOAL. Carli Lloyd blasts one up close. Her 112th career goal makes a sixth consecutive World Cup goal, a World Cup record.

22′: Chile breaks through on a very rehearsed freek kick, getting the ball behind the U.S. defense and Naehler. But the goal is called back on an offiside.

23′: Yellow Card: Lindsey Horan.]

26′: Goal. Julie Ertz heads in a controversial cross from Davidson with authority. It is her first World Cup goal.

35′: Goal. Carli Lloyd heads in a corner kick for her second of the night. 3-0 USA.

Sweden 5 – 1 Thailand

Sweden advanced to the knockout stage, beating Thailand 5-1. But it was tears of joy on the bench as Kanjana Sungngoen scored Thailand’s first-ever World Cup goal late in the game.

After stealing the ball from Sweden in their own half of the field, team captain Sungngoen took a long through ball down the right side and made a fantastic run past the Sweden defence, putting the ball just over Lindahl’s left shoulder with a blistering stike near-post.

With six points, Sweden will advance to the round of 16. Final standings in Group F are far from finalized, however, with United States having to play their second match against Chile today. Both Sweden and the U.S. will face each other on Thursday in a match that will likely decide first and second place.
