In her State of the Union address, GOP Alabama Senator Katie Britt condemned United States President Joe Biden by utilizing one particular instance of sex trafficking that occurred 20 years ago.
In response to Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, Britt (R-Ala.) defended the remarks she made.
She had blasted Biden’s administration by describing the experience of a woman who was sexually assaulted and trafficked in Mexico between 2004 and 2008. However, Britt seemingly implied that this woman’s traumatizing experiences had occurred in the United States, thanks to Joe Biden’s open border policies.
Nevertheless, the senator used the woman’s narrative as an example to disparage Biden, which drew backlash after the victim herself came out and explained to the press that Biden was not president at the time and that this had occurred in Mexico.
However, on Sunday, Britt proudly stood by her remarks and dismissed the left’s criticisms, saying that the president’s border policy was still reflected in the story.
“I’ve said, in [Biden’s] first 100 days he had 94 executive actions, and those executive actions didn’t just create the crisis. They invited it,” Britt said in a Fox News Sunday interview with Shannon Bream.
“The truth is, and the media knows that they’re not covering it, that human trafficking has gone up under President Biden,” she added. “If you look back under 2018, it was a $500 million industry, human trafficking by the drug cartels. It is now a $13 billion dollar industry. Shannon, the drug cartels are winning under this. This is a story of what is happening now.”
Later on Thursday, Biden’s campaign retaliated, criticizing Britt’s record on immigration policies.
A bipartisan border-security agreement was blocked by congressional Republicans earlier this year, according to White House spokesman Andrew Bates. However, GOP officials maintained that the bill was purposely deceiving, faulty, and would have allotted even more funding for Ukraine even though it is completely unrelated to the Southern border.
“Last month, Senator Britt sided against President Biden, the Border Patrol Union, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by opposing the toughest bipartisan border deal in modern history — instead voting with fentanyl traffickers,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said.
“Instead of telling more debunked lies to justify opposing the toughest bipartisan border legislation in modern history, Senator Britt should stop choosing human smugglers and fentanyl traffickers over our national security and the Border Patrol Union,” Bates added.
