An elderly woman who had been missing for nine years was found stuffed in a freezer at a California home.
Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones, 81, was discovered by out-of-town family members in San Diego inside the house’s freezer.
The body was discovered by the family members, who alerted authorities on December 22nd at approximately 11:45 a.m., the SDPD said in a statement on Thursday.
The San Diego Police Homicide Unit was contacted to conduct an investigation due to the peculiar placement of the elderly person’s corpse.
The police said that there was no visible sign of a traumatic injury to the body and that the death is still being looked into as suspicious.
Based on the investigation conducted, detectives have concluded that Haxby-Jones may have been missing or deceased for as long as nine years.
The identity of the current occupant of the Zion Avenue home where the body was found is unknown.
Former homicide detective Pete Carrillo told the press that Haxby-Jones’ financial records would probably be examined by investigators.
“It’s a misappropriation of a dead body; you have a duty to call the authorities if someone has passed so they can be processed in a normal fashion,” Carrillo said. “All that process has been avoided for a particular reason, and one could only think that it was to perhaps benefit financially from not reporting her death.”
According to the SDPD, the Medical Examiner’s Office is still looking into the cause of death.
Interviews with anyone who may have known her or have pertinent information about her are being sought after by the detectives.
