(Reuters) – Tiger Woods had his momentum slowed by a rain delay after a strong start at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio on Friday.
The former world number one, buoyed by a fist-pumping reaction to an eagle at the 11th hole, missed a six-foot birdie putt at the next when play resumed after a 90-minute delay at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
That left Woods five-under for the tournament and five strokes behind compatriot Kyle Stanley, who was in the lead at 10-under through 11 holes.
Along with the eagle, Woods had four birdies, after opening with a bogey, to the delight of a large gallery.
Australian Jason Day shot his second consecutive four-under 68 to share the clubhouse lead with three other players.
Japanese first round co-leader Hideki Matsuyama (71) and Americans Wesley Bryan (68) and J.B. Holmes (66) also were on eight-under 136 at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
