The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other New York City investigators raided the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) Brooklyn headquarters as well as the homes of two of the department’s fire chiefs on Thursday morning.
Two senior FDNY chiefs, Brian Cordasco and Anthony Saccavino, had their homes searched by the feds as part of a corruption probe into accusations regarding allegedly accepting illegal payments, according to insider sources.
The investigation began last summer after claims that entailed the two chiefs were each paid $100,000 to speed up or set up inspections, according to The New York Times.
According to the New York Post, the chiefs had their phones seized when federal agents arrived at their doors.
Additionally, the fourth floor of the FDNY HQ was closed off and investigators were in the process of removing records and computers.
The two FDNY chiefs were considered loyal to current Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, who promoted them after she demoted three other chiefs, leading to mutiny among the department, sources continued.
“The FDNY’s first priority is always keeping New Yorkers safe, and we expect every member of the department to act appropriately. As soon as Commissioner Kavanagh was alerted to these allegations last fall, she immediately referred them to DOI to investigate them,” a spokesperson for the department said in a statement.
“Commissioner Kavanagh has proactively placed the employees at the center of this investigation on modified duty, and we are awaiting guidance from DOI regarding further action.”
