BEIJING (Reuters) – Reigning Olympic champions Canada were eliminated from the mixed doubles competition after a narrow 8-7 defeat to unbeaten Italy at the National Aquatics Centre in Beijing on Monday.

In a must-win tie for Canada’s John Morris and Rachel Homan, they lost the close measure in the extra end as Italians Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner ensured their perfect round-robin record remained intact.

Morris had won gold in 2018 with Kaitlyn Lawes when mixed doubles debuted as an Olympic event.

The result means Sweden, who lost 12-8 to Italy on Sunday night, will take on Constantini and Mosaner again later on Monday in the semi-finals, with Britain playing Norway in the other tie.
