Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Tuesday that it struck the Lebanese capital of Beirut, targeting the Hezbollah commander behind the deadly attack that killed 12 children over the weekend.

Witnesses heard a “loud blast” in the Lebanese capital as the IDF launched a “targeted strike” on Fuad Shukr, whom it said was responsible for the Golan Heights attack on Saturday.

“The IDF carried out a targeted strike in Beirut, on the commander responsible for the murder of children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians,” they wrote in a statement.

According to Reuters, a security source told the outlet that it remains unclear if Shukr, who is second-in-command of the terrorist group, had survived.

The strike took place in the Dahieh neighborhood of Beirut, which is known as a Hezbollah stronghold, and came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a “severe response” to the Golan Heights attack.

“These children are our children … The state of Israel will not, and cannot, let this pass,” he said. “Our response will come and it will be harsh.”

At least one person was killed and several others were injured in Tuesday’s strike in southern Beirut. The attack consisted of three missiles launched from an aerial drone, according to NNA, Lebanon’s state news agency.

Additionally, flights to Beirut airport were canceled starting on Monday due to fears of Israel’s retaliatory strike.

Since the horrific attack on the soccer field in Israel, the IDF have carried out several airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which included a drone attack Monday that reportedly killed two Hezbollah operatives.

Meanwhile, the terrorist group has still denied any involvement regarding the attack on the weekend.
