On this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress put together a united Army to fight for Independence from Great Britain.

Now, over 900,000 uniformed soldiers represent the largest of the six military branches.

Notable ceremonies on Friday included a cake-cutting event at the Pentagon and honoring fallen service members at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery.

The Army’s theme this year is “honoring the past… Defending the future.”

“Our motto is ‘this we’ll defend.’ Those words make clear what we owe the American people we will continue to keep that commitment as our Army has done for the past 249 years,” said Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George in a birthday video message.
