The New York Yankees on Saturday added their newest acquisition, left-handed starter J.A. Happ, to the active roster.
Happ, who the club also announced will wear No. 34, is scheduled to make his Yankees debut on Sunday.
New York acquired Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in exchange for utility infielder Brandon Drury and outfield prospect Billy McKinney.
Happ, 35, is viewed by most as a rental for the Yankees, who have been looking to add to their rotation as they try to keep up with Boston in the American League East. The lefty is 10-6 with a 4.18 ERA this season, striking out 130 in 114 innings pitched. He was a first-time All-Star this season and is scheduled to become a free agent after the season.
–Outfielder Yasiel Puig has been reinstated from the 10-day disabled list by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Alex Verdugo was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Puig, 27, went on the DL on July 8 and missed 15 games with a right oblique strain. He has played in 76 games for the Dodgers, who lead the National League West by 1 1/2 games entering play Saturday. He is batting .265 with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
–The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have placed first baseman Josh Bell (left oblique strain) and outfielder Corey Dickerson (left hamstring strain) on the 10-day disabled list and have called up utility man Jose Osuna and outfielder Austin Meadows from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Meadows, 23, shined in his first taste of the big leagues. The Pirates’ first-round pick from 2013 hit .298 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in 48 games with Pittsburgh earlier this season.
In 23 games with the Pirates this season, Osuna, 25, is batting .196 with two home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs. This is his fourth big league stint of the year.
