Henri was downgraded to a tropical depression Sunday night while located in Connecticut. The storm made landfall Sunday just after noon near Westerly, Rhode Island, as a tropical storm with maximum winds sustained winds of 60 mph.
President Biden on Sunday pledged federal assistance, saying he had spoken to the governors of the states affected.
“We don’t know the full extent of the storm’s impact today, but we’re acting to prepare for and prevent damage as much as possible,” he said.
The storm made an eastward turn overnight Saturday into Sunday, largely sparing Long Island, which had appeared earlier to be directly in the storm’s path. After making landfall on Rhode Island, the storm weakened as it dumped heavy rain in southern New England and moved westward.
Heavy rains are expected throught New York and New England through Monday, with some of the heaviest rainfalls expected in inland counties. In New York, flash flood warnings remained in effect for parts of New York City and some northern counties.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, where heavy rain caused flooding on Saturday night and led to ground saturation ahead of Henri, there were flash flood warnings in effect Sunday night in six counties, with flood warnings issued in another five counties.
