Almost half the states in the nation are under stay-at-home orders at the end of a week that has seen the United States become the country with the most confirmed coronavirus cases: over 94,000.
There have been more than 44,000 cases alone in New York state, which is seeking to build 8 temporary hospitals in New York City and the surrounding areas.
More than 1,400 people have died in the United States and the rate of new infections is still increasing fast in many regions, including in New York, the U.S. epicenter of the global outbreak. Some hospitals there are already overwhelmed, and new warnings come daily from governors and health officials in other states that ventilators and ICU beds are running short.
Worldwide, more than 570,000 people have caught the virus — including Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson — and it has killed over 26,000.
More than 123,000 of the people who have infected have recovered, but as President Trump conceded on Thursday, “there is still a long battle ahead.”
