Late on Thursday, former President Donald Trump issued a challenge to President Joe Biden for yet another debate, but this time, “no holds barred” guidelines.
“I have the answer to the Crooked Joe Biden Incompetence Puzzle — Let’s do another Debate, but this time, no holds barred – An all on discussion, with just the two of us on stage, talking about the future of our Country,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “The ratings were massive for the First Debate, record setting, in fact, but this one, because of the format, would blow everything away!”
“No holds barred” refers to being “without any restrictions…This expression comes from wrestling, where certain holds are illegal, or barred, and has been used figuratively since about 1940,” according to dictionary.com
Biden’s performance in last week’s debate, in which he stammered, stumbled over his words, and had a raspy voice, raised doubts among his own party regarding whether he would continue on as the 2024 Democrat nominee.
Since then, he has reportedly received advice to withdraw from the campaign from three House Democrats as well as other party members.
However, Biden still has vocal advocates from his own party who are standing by him, which includes former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Both Clinton and Obama posted on X (Twitter) after the first debate in order to express their continued endorsement of Biden.
In a statement on Thursday night, Trump stated that he hoped Biden would further address topics like immigration and inflation in the future discussion.
“Likewise, it would be yet another test for me. What a great evening it would be, just the two of us, one on one, in a good, old fashioned Debate, the way they used to be. ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANYPLACE!!!” Trump continued.
In a fundraising email sent on the same day, Biden stated that no one “is pushing me out,” in addition to the White House’s insistence on Wednesday that he will remain in the presidential race.
“I’m the Democratic Party’s nominee,” the fundraising email read. “No one is pushing me out. I’m not leaving, I’m in this race to the end, and WE are going to win this election. If that’s all you need to hear, pitch in a few bucks to help [Vice President Harris] and me defeat Donald Trump in November.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Biden reiterated at a Fourth of July event at the White House.
