The Boston Red Sox traded two relief-pitching prospects to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for second baseman Ian Kinsler and cash considerations, the teams announced late Monday.
Boston will send Los Angeles left-hander Williams Jerez and righty Ty Buttrey for Kinsler, who is set to hit free agency after the season.
According to The Athletic, the Angels will send the Red Sox $1.8 million of the $3.6 million remaining on Kinsler’s deal.
Kinsler, 36, will help replace veteran Dustin Pedroia, who returned from offseason knee surgery in May but lasted just three games before going back on the disabled list. It is unclear if Pedroia will return this season.
Boston third baseman Rafael Devers is also on the disabled list, stretching a thin infield group and leading to backup catcher Blake Swihart starting at third base on Sunday.
Kinsler was batting .239 with 13 homers and 32 RBIs in 91 games during his first season with the Angels. He spent the previous 12 years of his career with the Texas Rangers (2006-13) and Detroit Tigers (2014-17), making four All-Star appearances, most recently in 2014. He also won a Gold Glove at second base in 2016.
Jerez, 26, was a second-round pick by Boston in 2011. He has gone 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and five saves in 33 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Buttrey, 25, is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and one save in 32 games with Pawtucket. The Red Sox took him in the fourth round of the 2012 draft.
