ALGIERS, Algeria — Algeria’s state news agency reported Wednesday that a military plane crashed near the military base of Boufarik in Algeria. 257 people were killed when the plane went down, according to Algeria’s defense ministry.

Boufarik is located in northern Algeria, near the Mediterranean sea, some 20 miles from the capital, Algiers.

The plane was on its way to Tindouf in the south of the country, according to the Reuters news agency, where refugee camps from long-running territorial disputes in Western Sahara are located.
