CNN anchor and host Dana Bash suggested that the Democrat Party is attempting to attract male voters who are not predisposed to having high levels of testosterone, citing Governor Tim Walz and second gentleman Doug Emhoff as examples of the party’s outreach to this demographic.
Prior to Bash’s statement, fellow anchor Jake Tapper also made his own assessment, stating that the majority of male voters are backing former President Donald Trump in this election, while the majority of female voters are supporting Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The gender gap, in American politics, has been trending very strongly, for years,” Tapper argued. “But this year, at least according to polls, it is so strong. The women—the women vote is overwhelmingly for Harris. The male vote overwhelmingly for Trump, though not as much.”
Soon after, Bash argued that Democrats, who nominated a woman for president in 2016 with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, are attempting to close this gap with voters using a different approach.
“But they are doing so in trying to put forward male figures, Tim Walz being one of them, [and] Doug Emhoff last night, who can speak to men out there who might not be the sort of testosterone-laden, gun-toting kind of guy who wants to listen to Hulk Hogan and the kind of players that came out at the RNC,” Bash said.
Abby Phillip, a fellow CNN anchor, contended that the Democrat Party was presenting “a different version of America” than Republicans were at the Republican National Convention. She cited this year’s DNC speakers, some being from Planned Parenthood and others from LGBTQ organizations, whereas the RNC’s speakers included legendary wrestler Hulk Hogan and UFC president Dana White, two obviously masculine personalities.
According to Phillip, Democrats must continue performing a “balancing act” to win over voters who do not support “Hogan-style” candidates, yet want the party to still “speak to them” while giving an affirming message.
