WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury Department’s inspector general is investigating how the agency handled a congressional request for President Donald Trump’s tax returns, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, Richard Neal, requested the investigation, the Times reported. Democrats have long sought the snapshots of Trump’s personal finances, and the Republican president has zealously resisted handing his returns over. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a member of Trump’s cabinet, and Democrats are currently fighting over the returns in court.
Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.
