At least two people were killed in a shooting at a nightclub in Oslo, Norway, early Saturday morning, according to Norwegian authorities.
The Oslo Police District reported that several shots were fired at a nightclub. Police confirmed that at least two people were killed.
A suspect was in custody, police said. The circumstances of the shooting were unclear.
Public broadcaster NRK and other local media said the attack occurred at a popular gay bar and nightclub, according to Reuters. Oslo is scheduled to hold its Pride parade on Saturday.
Police said 14 people were wounded in the attack, according to Reuters. A local newspaper cited by Reuters said police told reporters that three people were severely wounded.
A journalist for NRK said he “saw a man arrive with a bag, he picked up a gun and started to shoot,” according to Reuters.
Police spokesman Tore Barstad told The Associated Press that the motive was not immediately known and that it wasn’t clear whether the shooting had any connection to the Pride parade.
“Police are in contact with the organizers of the Pride event this Saturday. There will be a continuous assessment of what measures police should take to protect that event and whether this incident has a connection to Pride at all,” Barstad said.
Norway experienced one of the worst mass shootings in Europe in 2011, when a right-wing extremist killed 69 people on the island of Utoya after setting off a bomb in Oslo that left eight dead.
