Median household incomes grew in 16 states and D.C. in 2022—see where they increased the most

Last year was rough year on Americans’ household finances. 

Amid an inflation crisis that saw prices up 9.1% year over year in June 2022, Americans’ incomes appear to have taken a hit. The U.S. median household income dropped by 2.3% to $74,580 in 2022, down from $76,330 in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau

While residents in some states saw median incomes drop by even more, household earnings in 16 states and the District of Columbia actually grew over the same period. 

The median household income in Delaware jumped from $74,070 in 2021 to $80,750 in 2022, the biggest increase in the country in both percentage and dollar amount.

Here’s where median household income increased between 2021 and 2022, according to data from the Federal Reserve.
