The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus approached 17,000 Thursday as New York reported its highest single-day death toll yet. The virus has sickened more than 1.6 million worldwide, killing almost 96,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. In the U.S., there have been more than 466,000 confirmed cases.
In the U.K., Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved out of intensive care, where he was being treated for coronavirus, a Downing Street spokesperson said in a Thursday statement. Johnson, 55, was the first world leader to test positive for the virus.
“The Prime Minister has been moved this evening from intensive care back to the ward, where he will receive close monitoring during the early phase of his recovery,” the spokesperson said, adding that Johnson is in “extremely good spirits.”
