At least one person was killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting Thursday morning at a high school in Southern California, authorities said. The suspect is in the hospital “in grave condition,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a press conference.
Henry Mayo Hospital said on Twitter a female patient died from the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita. Authorities later said she was 16 years old.
There were a total of six victims, including the suspected shooter, whose 16th birthday is today, authorities said.
CBS Los Angeles reported that classes had not gotten underway when the shooting occurred, so the campus was not completely full.
Suspect in custody after manhunt
Villanueva said the suspect was being treated at a local hospital.
CBS News has learned from a law enforcement source that the suspect was being treated from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The sheriff’s department earlier described the suspect as an Asian male. Eric Ortiz from the sheriff’s department told KCBS-TV authorities don’t know his motive.
Lockdown lifted at area schools
All schools in the area of the shooting went on lockdown, Ortiz said, while authorities looked for the suspect.
By early afternoon, all lockdowns were lifted, Mike Kuhlman, deputy superintendent for the William S. Hart Union High School District, said in a statement.
“A weapon has been seized”
The William S. Hart Union High School District said it was notified by law enforcement that a suspect was in custody “and a weapon has been seized.”
“We have been told that there is no other suspect,” the district said.
Kuhlman said in a statement, “our hearts go out to the families of those affected by this terrible incident. Words are insufficient in times such as these.”
