Tropical Storm Elsa made landfall in Taylor County on Florida’s Gulf Coast, forecasters said in an 11 a.m. advisory on Wednesday. The storm is continuing to hit the state with heavy wind and rain as it moves north across northern Florida.
The National Hurricane Center says Elsa is located about 65 miles north-northwest of Cedar Key and 115 miles west-southwest of Jacksonville, still packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
Elsa strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane for several hours on Tuesday night before weakening to a tropical storm. As of Wednesday morning, no fatalities or significant structural damage had been reported, according to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. And a hurricane warning across a stretch of the Florida’s west coast has been changed to a tropical storm warning.
A tropical storm warning is also in effect for a swath of the Georgia coast up into South Carolina, where significant flooding is predicted. The National Hurricane Center said a storm surge warning is in place for a section of Florida’s west coast, from Aripeka to the Aucilla River.
