Chicago officials on Thursday released video footage from the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo last month.
The video shows an officer exiting his vehicle and chasing Toledo, who is running down an alley. When the officer catches up to the teen, he orders him to raise his hands and said, “Drop it, drop it.” The officer fires a single shot as the teen raises his hands.
After the teen drops to the ground, the officer rushed to administer aid and calls for backup. Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday said there was “no evidence” that the 13-year-old fired a weapon at police before he was fatally shot.
Toledo, a seventh-grader at Gary Elementary School, was shot in the chest and killed by a police officer on March 29 in an alley in the Little Village neighborhood. The city’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability released the video Thursday and said it had informed Toledo’s family of the plan.
At a bond hearing Saturday for a 21-year-old man who was with Toledo, prosecutors said Toledo had a gun in his hand when an officer shot and killed him. Prosecutors said the man, Ruben Roman, had fired the gun, and that Adam was holding it when he was shot and killed by police when Roman was already being detained, CBS Chicago reported.
