This is democracy’s day, a day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve. We’ve learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile, and at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed. Reporter: Still the new president calling this a time of testing. We faced an attack on our democracy and on truth, a raging virus, growing inequity, the sting of systemic racism, a climate in crisis, America’s role in the role. To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy, unity. Putting an end to the travel ban and cancelling the keystone pipeline permit and taking his first steps to tackling this pandemic, requiring masks on federal property. These are just executive actions. They are important, but we’re going to need legislation for all the other things we’re going to do. Reporter: We’ll need to work with a very divided congress, but today in a gesture of goodwill Republican leaders of both chambers wishing the new administration well. I have to note not only did we just swear in a son and daughter of the senate to these houses but indeed both these former senators skipped the house all together. Reporter: Now this message of unity we heard so much today will continue tonight in tonight’s show. Presidents Obama, Clinton and bush got together where they are discussing among certain things the peaceful transfer of power, the importance of upholding that and upholding our democracy.
