Plane bursts into flames at Toledo airport

A cargo plane crashed near an Ohio airport early Wednesday, killing two people, officials said. The plane struck several unoccupied vehicles, and the crash ignited a fire, according to the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.

The plane was approaching the airport when it went down at 2:37 a.m. ET on a road in Monclova, Ohio, just east of Toledo Express Airport. A port authority spokesperson confirmed to CBS News two people died in the crash, and the Federal Aviation Administration said only two people were on the aircraft.

A port authority police official told CBS News the plane was “fully engulfed.” The plane was thought to be carrying auto parts, CBS affiliate WTOL-TV reports.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the twin-engine Convair 440 crashed into the parking lot of a truck repair facility. The agency said the ensuing fire spread to vehicles at the business. 

The fire was brought under control but smoke was still emerging from it three hours later.

The plane was coming from a small airport near Memphis, WTOL-TV reports. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane departed from Millington Regional Jetport in Tennessee.

Multiple fire departments from different counties in the area were called in to fight the blaze, but airport operations weren’t impacted.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the National Transportation Safety Board would lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.
