New York Mets minor league outfielder Tim Tebow is done for the year.
A deep cut on his left pinky, suffered in July, will end his season, according to Newsday’s Tim Healey. It’s the second consecutive season that Tebow, who turns 32 on Wednesday, has been shut down due to injury.
In 77 games with Triple-A Syracuse this season, Tebow finished with a .163 batting average, four home runs and 19 RBIs. He also struck out 98 times.
A left-handed-hitting outfielder and designated hitter, Tebow batted .273 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 84 games at Double-A Binghamton last season. He was one of 13 Mets farmhands invited to spring training.
–Confusion over a since-returned stolen vehicle resulted in New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman being forced from a vehicle at gunpoint by police in Connecticut on Friday.
Cashman told the New York Post that he was in his Jeep Wrangler when as many as nine Connecticut police officers stopped him while pulling out of a gas station.
The vehicle had been stolen in Norwalk, Conn., last week and since returned after being abandoned in the Bronx, but police in New York City hadn’t removed it from the stolen-car database. The confusion was cleared up and Cashman was free to leave.
–The Toronto Blue Jays put outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list Saturday with strained left quadriceps.
Gurriel, 25, sustained the injury in the ninth inning of Thursday’s 12-6 loss to the New York Yankees. He left the game after hustling to first base with an infield single.
Gurriel is batting .279/.331/.548 with 19 homers and 47 RBIs in 79 games this season.
–The New York Yankees activated catcher Gary Sanchez from the injured list ahead of their game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
He has been out since July 24 with a left groin strain. He was 1-for-5 in two games on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Backup catcher Kyle Higashioka was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Friday’s game.
–The Chicago Cubs placed bullpen stalwart Steve Cishek on the 10-day injured list and recalled pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa.
Cishek is 3-5 with a 3.58 ERA and seven saves in a team-high 54 appearances this season. The 33-year-old right-hander pitched in a club-high 80 games last season, his first with the team after signing as a free agent.
Cishek has a 2.74 ERA in 556 career relief appearances for five franchises.
