STriple Crown hopeful Justify tested the surface at Belmont Park by going for a gallop on Thursday, one day after his arrival for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
Trainer Bob Baffert was thrilled with how the colt adjusted to his new surroundings after a day of travel and was impressed with Justify’s gallop of 1 3/8 miles on an overcast morning in Elmont, N.Y.
“He looked like he was getting over it really well,” Baffert told the assembled media after the gallop. “It looked like he was happy. He was a little aggressive, a little fresh. He couldn’t have looked any better.”
Justify is looking to become the 13th Triple Crown winner on Saturday, and Baffert is retaining the same kind of pre-race formula.
He said the training sessions have prepared Justify to handle the 1 1/2-mile Belmont track.
“We’ve been training over a deep and tiring track in California,” Baffert said. “My horses, when they come here, just float over this. It was really nice.”
Exercise rider Humberto Gomez was aboard for the gallop while jockey Mike Smith watched intently.
“He looked very nice going over the ground, looks really good,” Smith said. “He should like the track.”
Post time for the Belmont Stakes is 6:37 p.m. ET.
