Jobless claims fall to 238,000 as omicron surge begins to slow

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits declined last week, as a nationwide surge of COVID-19 driven by the highly contagious omicron variant began to fade.

Figures released Thursday by the Labor Department show that applications for the week ended Jan. 29 fell to 238,000 from a revised 260,000 a week earlier, beating the 245,000 forecast by Refinitiv analysts.
