Gunman kills son, shoots husband of federal judge in New Jersey

The son of a federal judge was shot and killed Sunday night while answering the door at the family’s home in North Brunswick, New Jersey, a law enforcement source told CBS News. The judge’s husband was also shot, according to law enforcement sources.

The gunman allegedly fled.

A source told CBS News that U.S. District Judge Esther Salas is believed to be unharmed. Salas’ husband, Mark Anderl, is a criminal defense attorney and former Essex County prosecutor.

The FBI is investigating the shooting and is currently looking for one suspect. The FBI is leading the investigation, working with U.S. Marshals and state and local authorities.

According to The Associated Press, authorities believe the gunman posed as a delivery driver.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy tweeted that “Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act.”

Salas is a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. She is known for presiding over the case of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice and her husband, Joe Giudice. The two pleaded guilty to fraud charges in 2014. Teresa was sentenced to 15 months in prison while Joe was hit with a 41-month sentence.
