Top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece handled crowd favorite and wild-card Tommy Paul 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday night to reach the quarterfinals at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C.

Paul created five opportunities to break Tsitsipas but converted just one. That break did give him a 5-3 edge in the second set, but Tsitsipas won the final four games, clinching on his third match point.

Next up for Tsitsipas will be Australia’s Jordan Thompson, who upended 14th seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-5.

Fifth-seeded American John Isner used 14 aces to dispatch Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 6-4, saving all six break points he faced. In the quarterfinals, he’ll face 10th-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire, who survived Australian qualifier Marc Polmans 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).

Seventh-seeded David Goffin of Belgium fell 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5) to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, and three other seeded players also lost: Frenchman Gilles Simon (11th) and Pierre-Hugues Herbert (15th) and Australian Alex de Minaur (12th).

Canadians Milos Raonic (eighth) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (ninth) each advanced, beating Americans Tim Smyczek and Reilly Opelka, respectively.

Kevin Anderson of South Africa withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury, continuing an injury-plagued season.

Generali Open

Top-seeded Dominic Thiem cruised into the quarterfinals in his home country, beating fellow Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-2 in 76 minutes.

Thiem faced just one break point, losing it early in the first set, but quickly answered. He hit 81 percent of his first serves, winning 80 percent (28 of 35) of them.

He’ll draw Spain’s Pablo Andujar, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Dusan Lajovic couldn’t hold a lead against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Other seeded players had less trouble. No. 3 Fernando Verdasco of Spain dispatched Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik 6-4, 7-6 (7), No. 4 Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay rallying past Austrian wild-card Dennis Novak 6-7 (1), 6-0, 6-2, and No. 7 Lorenzo Sonego of Italy surviving Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).

Abierto de Tenis Mifel

Top-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini recovered from a slow start to move past Spain’s Marcel Granollers 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the quarterfinals in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Fognini was broken twice to open the match and quickly fell in a 4-0 hole en route to dropping the first set. In each of the final two sets, he went up a break only to give one back, before breaking again and serving out.

In the quarterfinals, Fognini will face fifth-seeded American Taylor Fritz, who battled back to hold off India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Second-seeded Guido Pella of Argentina handled Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2. He’ll next face South Korean qualifier Soonwoo Kwon, who survived Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Other seeds to advance included third-seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman, seventh-seeded Moldovan Radu Albot and eighth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. Schwartzman and Kukushkin will face each other in the quarterfinals.

Albot will face Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis, who rallied to upset fourth-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
