A new New York Times poll has Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump narrowly edging out his Democrat opponent, Kamala Harris.

The poll by the New York Times/Siena College poll, which is regarded as one of the most accurate, has Trump leading at 48% compared to Harris’s 47% among likely national voters.

Trump has been steadily regaining his footing in the polls following an initial surge during the beginning of Harris’s honeymoon stage, after President Joe Biden’s departure from the November race.

The poll included 1,695 voters nationwide with a margin of error within 2.8 points.

“Polling shows President Trump is dominating both nationally and in the battleground states because voters want a return to pro-America policies that actually work, not the weak, failed, and dangerously liberal policies of Comrade Kamala,” stated Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson.

The poll found that the majority of voters trust Harris’s policies on abortion (54% to 49%) and democracy (50% to 45%), and Trump led on the economy (55% to 42%) as well as immigration (53% to 43%).

Additionally, the poll stated that the top issues for voters were the economy (21%), abortion (14%), immigration (12%), inflation and living expenses (7%), and democracy (7%).

It was also found that 56% of respondents do not believe that Harris represents a change in policy or direction from the Biden administration. That figure is in contrast to the 51% of respondents who believe Trump represents a major change.

Over 60% of likely voters want the next president to have major policy shifts away from Biden’s unpopular administration, according to the New York Times.

Political strategist James Carville recently published an op-ed claiming that whoever can market themselves as the biggest change from the current administration is in the best position to win, which clearly provides Trump with an advantage as Harris is inherently tied to the Biden administration’s lackluster record.

It was also noted that Harris’s favorability rating trailed Trump, with 45% viewing her favorably, as opposed to 46% of respondents viewing Trump as very favorably.

“Highest-rated pollster in the country and a large sample size, too. Fortunately for Harris she has the debate this week and none of this will matter if she has a good night,” stated election data guru Nate Silver, regarding the recent poll.

Trump and Harris are scheduled to debate on Tuesday night, which has the potential to dramatically swing the race in either direction.
