The White House is imposing new sanctions against Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, taking aim at the ruling government regarded as illegitimate by the U.S.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and national security adviser John Bolton announced the U.S. will target Petróleos de Venezuela, or PDVSA. The officials spoke Monday at the first formal White House press briefing since December. The U.S. recognized the Venezuelan opposition leader as the country’s legitimate president last week.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders also announced a trade delegation from China will meet with administration officials led by the U.S. trade representative for renewed talks aimed at ending the two countries’ trade impasse. The talks will take place in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday.
