AMSTERDAM — A van ran into a small group of pop fans at a festival in the Netherlands early Monday, killing one and seriously injuring three people before the driver fled the scene. Police in the province of Limburg announced several hours later that the van had been located and the driver placed under arrest.

The crash happened in the pre-dawn hours near a campsite close to the famous Pinkpop festival in the southeastern municipality of Landgraaf. The victims of the crash were festival goers, according to the police.

Police there said a “technical investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision” was underway, but there was no immediate word on whether they believed the crash might have been intentional.

A statement released by the police in Limburg said all three of those injured in the crash remained hospitalized in critical condition. Their families were all notified.

Soon after the incident an emergency message sent by authorities to cell phones in the area warned people to be alert for a Fiat Doblo with the number 257 as part of its license plate.

The three-day concert, attended by tens of thousands of music fans, ended late Sunday with a performance by Bruno Mars.

Britain’s Guardian newspaper quoted police as saying the crash happened on one of the two roads serving as exits from the festival grounds.
