The Detroit Tigers signed slugger Renato Nunez to a minor league contract Wednesday.

The contract includes an invitation to spring training.

Nunez, who turns 27 in April, was designated for assignment and later released by the Baltimore Orioles in November. In 2019 with the Orioles, he slashed .244/.311/.460 for a .771 OPS in addition to his career highs of 31 home runs and 90 RBIs in 151 games.

During the truncated 2020 season, he slashed .256/.324/.492 for an .816 OPS and hit 12 home runs with 31 RBIs in 52 games.

In 293 games with Baltimore, the Oakland A’s and Texas Rangers, Nunez slashed .248/.313/.451 with 52 homers in five career seasons.

Nunez is expected to compete for playing time at first base and designated hitter.

The Tigers also signed infielder Greg Garcia to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Garcia, 31, appeared in 35 games last season for the San Diego Padres, hitting .200 with 11 RBIs. In 578 games with the Padres and St. Louis Cardinals (2014-18), Garcia is a career .245 hitter.
