Police in a Dallas suburb say they shot and killed a man after he reportedly shot his wife and opened fire on the officers

IRVING, Texas — Police in a Dallas suburb shot and killed a man Saturday after he reportedly shot his wife and opened fire on the officers, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers in Irving responded to a call before 10 a.m. from a woman who said her husband shot her, Investigator Ariel Esparza said in a statement.

The man had left by the time the officers arrived at the home in a residential part of the city about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of downtown Dallas.

Police searched the area and found the man in the backyard of a neighboring property, Esparza said. The officers announced themselves while entering the backyard, she said, and then both the man and the officers began shooting.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Esparza said. None of the officers involved were hurt.

Esparza did not say who fired first nor provide the names of any of the people involved. She said the investigation of the shooting is in its early stages and did not immediately respond to questions.
