Francisco Mejia’s tiebreaking, two-run single in Tampa Bay’s seven-run 11th inning Monday afternoon boosted the Rays to their major-league-best 11th straight win, 14-8 over the host Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.
A late-game substitution, Mejia lined a single off Joel Payamps (0-2) in his first at-bat to score Mike Brosseau and Taylor Walls, breaking a 7-7 tie. Randy Arozarena’s double and Austin Meadows’ fielder’s choice delivered RBIs against Tim Mayza.
Manuel Margot (three RBIs) added a two-run double and Brosseau singled in another in the five-hit frame to help finish off the four-game series sweep.
Joey Wendle went 3-for-4 with his second career grand slam, a double, two runs and four RBIs, and Jeffrey Springs (4-1) pitched two innings for the Rays, whose streak is one shy of the team record 12, set in 2004.
Twins 8, Orioles 3
Mitch Garver hit a two-run double to highlight a six-run eighth inning and Trevor Larnach and Kyle Garlick homered as Minnesota rallied for a victory over Baltimore in Minneapolis.
Minnesota won for the fourth time in five games and the 13th straight time against the Orioles. Garlick, Larnach, Alex Kirilloff, Rob Refsnyder and Andrelton Simmons each had two hits for the Twins.
DJ Stewart homered, Anthony Santander went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Freddy Galvis also had two hits for the Orioles, who lost their seventh straight game and fell for the 14th time in 16 games.
White Sox 5, Cardinals 1
Andrew Vaughn and Tim Anderson drove in two runs each to lead Chicago past visiting St. Louis.
Winning pitcher Lance Lynn (5-1) held the Cardinals to one run on three hits and three walks in seven innings. Michael Kopech closed out the game with two shutout innings as the White Sox snapped their three-game losing streak.
Losing pitcher Kwang Hyun Kim (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings as the Cardinals fell for the third time in four games.
Mariners 4, Athletics 2
Jarred Kelenic and Kyle Lewis homered, Yusei Kikuchi pitched six-plus strong innings and Seattle got the jump on host Oakland with a win in the opener of a three-game series.
With the American League West rivals going head-to-head for the first time this season, the Mariners overcame a Mark Canha home run to end a six-game losing streak while handing the A’s a second consecutive defeat.
The A’s got to the Seattle bullpen for a run in the eighth inning and put the potential tying run on base with no outs, but Erik Swanson struck out Chad Pinder, Ramon Laureano and Matt Olson in succession to preserve the 4-2 lead.
Marlins 9, Phillies 6
Corey Dickerson slugged a tie-breaking, two-run triple in the sixth inning, leading host Miami over slumping Philadelphia despite the Phillies scoring four runs in the top of the ninth.
Miami’s Dylan Floro faced one batter in the ninth — Rhys Hoskins — getting him to ground out for his first career save in his sixth major league season. Philadelphia has lost seven of its past nine games.
Adam Duvall hit a three-run homer in the seventh for the Marlins who have won six of eight. Dickerson and Jesus Aguilar each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Marlins. Adam Cimber (1-1) earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief.
Brewers 5, Padres 3
Brandon Woodruff threw seven shutout innings and host Milwaukee beat San Diego to end the Padres’ nine-game winning streak.
Manny Pina and Avisail Garcia homered to give the Brewers a quick lead, and Milwaukee went on to win its third in a row.
The Brewers scored five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings against Padres starter Blake Snell (1-1). The long ball and three walks doomed the left-hander, who fanned seven.
Rockies 3, Mets 2
Austin Gomber (3-4) struck out a career-high eight and pitched into the ninth inning for the first time as a big-leaguer as Colorado earned a rare road win, beating undermanned New York as Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz homered in the second inning and Garrett Hampson delivered an RBI triple in the fourth.
The Rockies have won four straight overall, but had lost its previous seven road games by a combined 36-13, improved to 3-17 away from Coors Field this season.
The loss was the third straight for the Mets, who have 16 players on the injured list. New York’s fourth-string center fielder, Johneshwy Fargas, exited after sustaining a left AC joint injury crashing into the wall in pursuit of Hampson’s triple. David Peterson (1-4) took the loss for the Mets after giving up all three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings.
Indians 6, Tigers 5
Eddie Rosario drove in two runs, right fielder Jordan Luplow made a game-saving catch, and Cleveland held on to edge host Detroit.
Detroit loaded the bases against Indians closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth, but Luplow made a diving snag of an Eric Haase liner to end the game. Jake Bauers had three hits and scored twice for Cleveland. Jean Carlos Mejia (1-0) pitched one inning of scoreless relief to get the win, while Clase recorded his eighth save.
Cleveland starter Sam Hentges gave up three runs and struck out seven in five innings. Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull, who threw a no-hitter at Seattle in his previous start, gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings. Willi Castro homered and drove in three runs to lead Detroit’s offense.
