Victoria Beckham wins fashion icon award

9:47 p.m.: Sarah Silverman and Jack McBrayer took the stage, and Silverman said that McBrayer was told he could present with anyone he wanted. Unfortunately for him, Issa Rae and the stars of “Broad City” were all busy. He laughed nervously when Silverman said they were a great pair. The two presented the award for male TV star of 2018, which went to Harry Shum Jr. for his role on “Shadowhunters.” He said he loves reading fan mail and hearing about how characters from the show affect his fans. “It means so much that you wrote me,” he said. He also thanked his “beautiful wife, who is my plus-two today,” he said with a wink; Shum’s wife, Shelby Rabara, is pregnant.

Amber Valletta presented Victoria Beckham with the People’s fashion icon award. Valletta revealed that she was wearing one of Beckham’s dresses onstage at the show. She talked about Beckham’s ambition and style and said that the former Spice Girl is also one of the nicest women she’s ever met.

Beckham paid tribute to victims of the California fires before thanking fans for their support. She said that recognition by her fans was very meaningful to her, and she talked about her hard work in fashion.

“If you really, really want it,” she began, referencing a Spice Girls lyric, “If you really, really put your head down and you focus and you work hard and you believe in yourself, what you can achieve is incredible. Many years ago,I started with girl power and now that message is still strong as ever.”

She continued and said to women who have struggled, “If you’ve ever been doubted, this award tonight is for all of us.”
