LOS ANGELES — A 50-year-old woman was fatally shot at the scene of a house fire early Tuesday, authorities said. A suspect was arrested after holing himself up for two hours inside the burned home south of downtown Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police Sgt. Frank Preciado says the suspect is believed to be the victim’s son. CBS Los Angeles had earlier reported that the victim was a 16-year-old girl, citing police.

Firefighters heard gunshots after quickly knocking down the flames in the two-story structure shortly around 4:30 a.m. in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood, fire department officials said. CBS Los Angeles reports that firefighters were forced to take cover behind a fire engine.

Police and sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and evacuated nearby homes during a standoff with the suspect.

The suspect was rolled out on a gurney at about 6:30 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, CBS Los Angeles reports.

There were no reports of injuries to firefighters or police officers.

Four adults and a child were displaced by the blaze, and the American Red Cross was sent to assist them, according to fire officials.
