Coronavirus live updates: Daily U.S. cases top 70,000 again; study finds J&J vaccine protected monkeys with one dose

U.S. new coronavirus cases increasingly look to have peaked, but Covid-19 hospitalizations and deaths continue to rise as they lag behind the surge in confirmed cases. Eight states, including California, Florida and Texas, all hit record-high average daily deaths on Wednesday, according to data from Hopkins. Wall Street will get more pandemic-era economic data Thursday morning, with prints on gross domestic product and weekly jobless claims. 

The following data was compiled by Johns Hopkins University:

  • Global cases: More than 17 million
  • Global deaths: At least 667,600
  • U.S. cases: More than 4.4 million
  • U.S. deaths: At least 150,700
